Return to Schedule Dr. Paul Burghardt
earned a MS in exercise physiology and a PhD in biomedical science and
has a decade of research experience investigating how physical activity
alters behavior and neurobiology. He currently holds positions in
the Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Institute at the University
of Michigan and is affiliated with the UM’s Depression Center and the
Michigan Metabolomics and Obesity Center. Dr. Burghardt is a member of
the Society for Neuroscience, the International Behavioral Neuroscience
Society. He has authored several scientific publications on the
behavioral, neurochemical, and physiological responses related to
exercise and the behavioral responses to pharmacological compounds. Dr.
Burghardt has experience in clinical exercise research settings with
projects that investigated the effe ct of nutritional supplements on
physical and mental performance in athletes, and clinical
rehabilitation experience in hospital-based phase-II cardiac
rehabilitation programs. He has also coached junior judo
competitors at national tournaments and helped individuals as a
personal trainer. Michelle R Hicks, MS, RN, CPNP received her
Bachelors degree in Nursing in 1987 from Michigan State University and
her Masters degree in Primary Care of Children from the University of
Michigan in 1994. She is currently a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner
for IHA at Pediatric Healthcare Associates in Ypsilanti. Her
clinical interests include prevention and management of pediatric
obesity and pediatric otolaryngology. Dr. Shannon Roznay is a chiropractor and a master of Nutrition Response Testing.
She practices at the Nutritional Healing Center of Ann Arbor with Dr. Darren
Schmidt and Dr. Mark Perlmutter. Dr. Shannon utilizes whole food supplements
and dietary changes to help people of all ages recover from many health
conditions, including depression, fatigue, allergies, digestive problems and
pain. She is a graduate of MSU and Logan College of Chiropractic. Catherine (Cathy) Fitzgerald, MA, RD, works with University of Michigan Health Systems’s (UMHS) Project Healthy Schools (http://www.projecthealthyschools.org)
promoting healthy eating and more active lifestyles in Ann Arbor and
Ypsilanti’s middle schools. Additionally, she is UMHS’ MFit Nutrition
Coach providing healthy eating check-ups so individuals see how their
current eating habits measure up against national guidelines and how
they can move towards the healthy eating goals they choose to pursue. Colleen Greene graduated from the University of Michigan with a major in Communications and Education (minor in kinesiology). She also has a graduate degree in Psychology. Colleen started her career as an area high school varsity basketball coach for both girls and boys from 1990-2000. She became an Assistant UM Dearborn Men's Basketball Coach from 2000-2004. Colleen then joined UM as the Wellness Coordinator-MFit for the University of Michigan Hospitals MFit Employee Wellness Program. Her current responsibilities include teaching exercise classes (zumba, body sculpting, step aerobics, pilates), running/administering all MFit exercise classes, personal training, running incentive programs such as Active U, and seminars on fitness, stress management, and general wellness. Sandy Pierani has been teaching group fitness since 2000. Her extensive on-going studies of West African dance has been incorporated into the Cardio Rhythmic Workout she has been teaching for Rec & Ed since 2007. She has been a member of Like Water Drum and Dance since 1999. She has over 5 years experience working in fitness. Sandy earned a Bachelors degree from Eastern Michigan University in Occupational Therapy (OT) and is currently working as an OT for Supplemental Healthcare. Marybeth Dillon-Butler, Author of Myrtle the Hurdler adn her Pink and Purple, Polka-Dotted Girdle, a children's picture book about a treat-craving, leisure-loving young turtle who discovers the wonders of healthy eating and the thrills of physical fitness. Dillon-Butler is a University of Michigan jounalism graduate and a veteran of 37 marathons. For 17 years, she was a reporter, editor and columnist at the Observer & Eccentric Newspapers in metropolitan Detroit.
